New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is on the presidential campaign trail today in Iowa. He is the 23rd candidate for the Democratic nomination. De Blasio’s schedule for today included meeting with farmers and sitting down at a roundtable about mental health and substance misuse. Tomorrow, de Blasio heads to South Carolina to speak at the Democratic Black Caucus Meeting in Columbia. He’ll also attend a church service in Charleston on Sunday. We’ll have more on de Blasio’s run later in our broadcast.
Comptroller Scott Stringer wants to expand child care coverage for toddlers up to 3 years old.
STRINGER Because the richest city in the world should have access to high quality, affordable childcare.
Under this proposed initiative, called NYC Under 3, families that make less than $26,000 per year would receive free child care. Families in higher income brackets would get a subsidy. Stringer hopes to implement his plan over six years. Stringer’s office said the legislation that would put this plan in motion still needs to pass on the state level.
The disciplinary trial for the officer accused of killing Eric Garner will resume Tuesday. Garner died of an asthma attack after N-Y-P-D Officer Daniel Pantaleo (pant-uh-LAY-oh) placed him in a chokehold on Staten Island in 2014. Yesterday, text messages read in court revealed that Pantaleo’s supervising Lieutenant said it was quote “not a big deal” when he learned Garner may have died during the encounter.
The 101st P-G-A Championship continues in Long Island this weekend. The tournament is the second major face-off of the season. Last year’s champion Brooks Koepka (KEP-kuh) is in first place after a course-record on the first day of play. The tournament wraps up Sunday. The winner will take home almost $2 million.
