The Ethics of Drones: A Q&A With Columbia’s Journalism School, Dean Coll (Two-Way)

HOST 1: You’re listening to Uptown Radio. I’m Nardos Mesmer.

HOST 2: As you heard in our newscast, President Barack Obama apologized yesterday for a U.S. counterterrorism operation that accidentally killed one American and one Italian on the Afghanistan and Pakistan border region. The two men were being held hostage at an Al Qaeda compound.

OBAMA: We do believe that the operation did take out dangerous members of al Qaeda. What we did not know, tragically, was that al Qaeda was hiding the presence of Warren and Giovanni in this same compound. (00:13)

HOST 1: The administration is now conducting reviews of the drone strike to determine what went wrong. Steve Coll, dean of Columbia Journalism School, wrote about the drone use in The New Yorker. He said the drone system designed by the United States was supposed to eliminate these types of mistakes.

BACK ANNOUNCE: Steve Coll is the dean of Columbia University’s Journalism school, and a staff writer at the New Yorker.
