The National Park Service says everyone is safe, after a bomb threat led to the evacuation of the Statue of Liberty earlier today. Visitors and personnel were taken from the site by ferry, and explosives experts searched the island along with Park Service Police.

 

The proposed forty five billion dollar merger between Comcast and Time Warner Cable is off. And regulators say this is a victory for consumers. Joe Sykes reports.

 

The Obama Administration is revising how it communicates with the families of hostages. Yesterday, President Obama apologized and took responsibility for the deaths of two hostages who were killed in a US drone strike in January.  White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said the administration is considering bringing together different agencies to better coordinate rescue efforts and improve contact with hostage families.

Earnest said that improved communication will not change the United States’ policy never to offer ransom.

 

Actress Angelina Jolie met with the U.N. Security Council today. She’s asking it to help the millions of Syrian refugees. She criticized the council’s efforts in the area so far.

Jolie wants the foreign ministers of the council nations to come together to negotiate a political solution in Syria. Nearly four million refugees have fled the country since the beginning of its civil war in 2011.

 

Leaders around the world are commemorating the one hundredth anniversary of the massacre of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire. An estimated 1.5 million Armenians were killed by Ottoman Turks. The massacre is widely viewed by historians as the first act of genocide in the 20th century. But modern Turkey, the successor to the Ottoman Empire, rejects the charge.
